USYD beats UNSW, but Australian Universities Lose…

29 10 2005

Reading SMH I came across this article SMH: Sydney beats UNSW. It discusses the latest list of top 200 Universities, which USYD has moved from 40th to 38th, and UNSW dropping from 36th to 40th.

While we all like to see USYD get one up on UNSW (us at USYD do anyway), whats a little more concerning is that Australian Universities have dropped overall in the ranks!

I just hope this isn’t a continuing trend, which sees both our ranks drop down the list….

Anywho, Go USYD!

Ubuntu Linux 5.10 (Breezy Badger) Released

14 10 2005

Yesterday the newest version of Ubuntu Linux was released. The previous version of Ubuntu (5.4 – Hoary Hedgehog) was renown for its simple install, and general ease of use. The new version is no different, it now appears to be able to repartition your old Operating system in the installer, which is really handy, (although still a little bit risky). As they say its Linux for Human Beings!

I used to run Mandrake 10.1 on my laptop until recently, but had troubles with my wifi card (Centrino – Intel 2200), but when I installed Ubuntu everything just worked (with a few minor exceptions).

If you’ve been waiting for a Linux that you can actually use everyday as your main OS, or just wanna find a good Linux distribution look no further!

Grab Ubuntu from www.ubuntu.com or hassle me as I have a couple of Free CD’s ( I have 3 of them left)!!

My Podcasts and Recordings

15 09 2005

Just a quick note: I’ve added a lists of regularly listened to podcasts, and my TV recordings to the sidebar of my blog (to the left of your screen).

My upcomming recordings are from my MythTV and I’m sure your not particularly interested in what I watch but too bad It’s up there now =P.

However the podcasts I listen to might be more interesting:
If you don’t know what podcasting is check theWikipedia’s podcast entry.

Worth particular note are the Triple J podcasts. These don’t actually have any music in them (dam copyright), but they have the mic breaks (talking parts) from several of their shows. Sunday Night Safran has to be my favorite, while This Sporting Life with Roy and H.G is also a classic. Dr Karl is also worth a look, it your into your science.

LUG Radio
is a really informative Linux Radio show, with is humour squarly placed in the gutter. It is a strange mix but it works! I don’t understand half the stuff they are going on about, but you learn alot (about Linux), and are pretty dam funny.
These crazy pom’s do a fair amount (a lot) of swearing so if your easily offended its probably not for you.

The other podcasts are also pretty good but I can’t be bothered rewriting any more on them =P.

On a technical note this list is live updated from my iPodder subscription list. As such it will change from time to time as I find new favorites and get bored of others.

Into the belly of the beast – Microsoft Sydney – 21 July 2005

10 09 2005

Windows Media Center On Plasma TV

Note: This was a Post I forgot to post earlier =P

21 July 2005:

Today I was invited to tour Microsoft Sydney’s new Digital Home display by Niven and our Sydney Uni Microsoft Rep. Scott.

The day started with pizza and a drink, followed by discussion on what would make Microsoft cooler. It wasn’t (quite) as lame as I make it sound here. The MS guys were pretty honest and open about Microsoft’s public image. They even put up an image of the death star humorously enough =].

We were all asked what we should do to improve the coolness of MS. The cool uzing Apple ipod, OSX Tiger and Apple design in general, were used as examples of cool. A suggestion was made that MS should focus more on prettying, and utilizing the fancy 3d features of modern graphic cards.

AFL: Sydney Swans vs Geelong – 9/9/2005

10 09 2005

Well last night was awesome!

A group of 5 of us decided to go the the AFL to see the Semi Final between the Sydney Swans and the Geelong Cats at the SCG last night.

We got to our seats on Yabba’s hill, with just enough time to send one of the guys up to get the first round.

For the first three quarters (and most of the 4th) the swans played the worst football I’d seen them play all season. They disposed of the ball poorly from the back line, and were simply unable to get it up to the forwards without losing possession!

Coming into three quarter time they had only scored 2 goals to the cat’s 6!! Scoring no goals in the second quarter!!
Sneaking a goal just before 3 quarter time their great comeback was starting to pick up pace!!
Nick Davis scored 3 goals in the last half of the fourth quarter, the last of which got them into the lead with only 3 seconds remaining!!!!

In great Swans style they managed to turn one of the worst games of football I’d been to, to the the best one I’ve ever been to!!

Looks like I might get Ruby to another game in the future now =P.

MythTV RSS: Using the XML Feed from MythTV

4 09 2005

Update: 2005-11-10 As requested here is a link to the Upcoming Recordings XML Stylesheet

Update: 2005-09-10 Here is my feed if your interested in seeing an example http://www.gtbox.info/myth_status/rss.py/status

About once a week I check my mythbox to make sure it is functioning properly.
Untill recently I’d often find I had run out of guide data! This meant all of my precious TV shows weren’t recorded as I wanted!! Tragedy I know! heh

Firefox Live Bookmark Listing MythTV Status

Anyway I got thinking, and came up with the idea of setting up an RSS feed using mythtv’s xml feed ( http://myth_ip:6544/xml ) to monitor my guide data.

In a nutshell I did this by writing a python script to apply an XSLT (XSL transformation) to myth’s xml feed, turning it into a valid RSS 2.0 file. Then using mod_python I made this script run on request and added the link as a live bookmark to firefox, and to my google.com/ig page. Now I can monitor my guide data by simple going to google.com/ig or looking at my firefox live bookmark

Change your RSS feed!

3 09 2005

Alright after a whole heap of Comment spam, and having given up on finding a way to turn off comments temporarily with bBlog, i’ve changed to WordPress!!

By tweaking Andrew’s fancy bBlog to WordPress SQL script I was able to import all my old posts.

WordPress is really fancy, has a whole bunch of nice plugins and all the themes look really nice.

I’ve chosen the Blix theme for the time being, only modifying it to add my dodgy logo.

If you’ve subscribed to the old RSS feed make sure you change it to http://www.gtbox.info/gtbox/blog/?feed=rss2 otherwise you’ll soon be missing out on my *cough-crap* interesting posts.

Google Moon

20 07 2005

Is there anything they can’t do =]

Yes that’s right, to honour the first manned Moon landing, which took place on July 20, 1969, Google has released Google moon. It is an adaptation of the famous Google map displaying the NASA maps of the moon.

Don’t forget to zoom right in to see what the moon is really made of =P.

GTBOX is Back!

7 07 2005

Finally I’ve been able to rebuild my computer from its smoking remains!!

I did write a 2 page odd description of the events that lead to my computers demise. However as it took my so bloody long to write it, by the time I pressed submit, my login had timed out and I lost the bloody thing!!

Anyway at some point in the near future I’ll post my rant explaining the details.

But to cut a long story short I upgraded my PC to:
AMD 64 3000+ (Venice Core)
Gigabyte K8NS Ultra-939
2x 512MB of Kingston DDR ram
Some Power Supply (can’t remember the name)

The rest of the stuff has stayed the same.
